The first Carlton Screen Advertising Golden elephant Award has been won by TBWA \ London for The Third Place, the agency's launch commercial for Sony's PlayStation 2.
Carlton introduced the awards to celebrate excellence in cinema advertising and the much talked about commercial, with its enigmatic storyline and a controversial appearance by a man with a duck's head (or was it a duck with a man's body?) was the clear, if slightly confusing winner.
It was directed by David Lynch, until this job a relatively unknown Hollywood director (see story above), through Great Guns. It was produced by Dianne Croll and created by Trevor Beattie, TBWA's chairman and creative director, and Bill Bungay, his art director.
Beattie and Bungay took receipt of their trophy, a no-expense-spared, solid casting of a fat, golden elephant, at a lavish ceremony in TBWA's car park. The presentation was made by Sandra Dickinson, the Big Cheese of Carlton Screen Advertising, who was wearing an Alexander McQueen dress especially designed for the occasion.
