The labour movement's opposition to the Canada-US. Free Trade Agreement continues. Our campaign against the FTA was based on an explicit rejection of the broader business agenda which lies behind the deal. It was never based on a narrow notion of isolationist nationalism - far from it.
Rather, it was, and continues to be, based on our deep commitment to fight for full employment, a marketplace with social responsibility and the belief that a strong and vibrant public sector is the only guarantee that the fruits of the economy will be fairly shared by all.
We reject the corporate agenda of privatization, deregulation and cuts in public programs. Reliance on unregulated market forces will lead to rising poverty, greater inequality and a socially divided society. Our reasons for rejecting the big business vision of Canada's future were clearly stated in the following CLC policy documents:
