by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - The Vi polysaccharide vaccine may prove useful in areas endemic for typhoid fever, both before and during outbreaks.
H.H. Yang and colleagues evaluated the protection conferred by Vi vaccine in an outbreak at a Chinese middle school. They determined that even children who were vaccinated after the first reports of typhoid benefited from the vaccine. Their findings were published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases.
Among 1,260 students who were immunized with the Vi vaccine prior to the outbreak, 73% were protected, while the 441 students who were immunized during the outbreak had an associated 71% protection rate (An outbreak of typhoid fever, Xing-An County, People's Republic of China, 1999: Estimation of the field effectiveness of Vi polysaccharide typhoid vaccine," J Infect Dis, June 15, 2001;183(12):1775-1780).
