It's always been a dream of mine to create something more from my love of cars,'' said Bob Teller, founder of the Automotive Road of Dreams Museum in Costa Mesa, California. ``Along with providing an educational venue for our younger generation, I know that I am sharing a passion for Americana and the way cars have somehow touched everyone's life.''
Such is Teller's high-minded goal for the museum, as stated in the press release announcing its April 21 opening. And Teller and his son Jeff do genuinely love cars. ``I'd look at cars in a barn,'' said Jeff. But they are also businessmen, and they see another purpose for their museum-to draw in customers for their Orange County Market Place, a 1200-vendor weekly swap meet held at the Orange County Fairgrounds.
``The whole idea was not to collect, but to create a whole new field of interest,'' said Bob.
``Women love to shop, men love to look at cars,'' said Jeff.
Five years ago they noticed that a Labor Day cruise event brought 3500 cars to the fairgrounds. They realized something was up.
``We did a little research and found there were 4000 classic and collectible cars in Orange County alone,'' said Jeff.
So they started collecting cars and they sent out requests for bids to design a car museum.
