Further research confirms that African-American children across the U.S. are at significant risk of being under-immunized.
National Immunization Survey data were reported in the May 2001 issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine (see NewsRx's Vaccine Weekly, May 9, 2001). And now associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington, Dr. James A. Taylor, and his colleagues have examined research performed by Pediatric Research in Office Settings network of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the pediatric section of the National Medical Association.
Taylor presented information on the study at the 2001 Pediatric Academic Societies meeting.
Taylor analyzed data on the immunizations of 13,520 children collected by 177 practitioners in 46 states. At eight months of age, about 68% of African-American children were fully immunized, compared to about 81% of non-African Americans.
