2001 MAY 24 - (NewsRx Network) -- by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - The zidovudine-derived spermicide WHI-07 is safe for vaginal application, researchers writing in the journal Toxicological Sciences report.
O.J. D'Cruz and colleagues working with the Parker Hughes Institute in Minnesota evaluated the safety of WHI-07 using a murine model
Several weeks of high-dose treatment with WHI-07 did not result in any significant adverse side effects, they said.
D'Cruz and coworkers administered WHI-07 gel intravaginally to mice for 13 weeks. The dosage was up to 5,700 times higher than WHI-07's effective spermicidal dose and up to 5.7 million times greater than effective anti-HIV dose, study data showed.
The spermicide did not have any effect on hematologic variables, body and organ weight, or chemical balance, the researchers reported. Extensive vaginal exposure to WHI-07 did not result in lesions or other morbidity.
No mortality was observed as a result ...
