PETALING JAYA, Wed. - It's not an excuse for bad driving habits but Malaysians can be proud of the fact that we have the second lowest rate for road deaths in Asean, and are on par with certain European countries.

Transport Parliamentary Secretary Donald Lim said Malaysia had 5.7 deaths for every 10,000 registered vehicles last year, a drop from 8.2 deaths in 1996.

These figures were obtained from the number of accidents per 10,000 registered vehicles which was 246.02 in 1996 and 236.27 last year.

This is despite the fact that the overall number of accidents had risen from over 189,000 in 1996 to 250,417 last year as the number of registered …
