With companies regularly needing short-term help, temporary staffing agencies have become a permanent part of the Bay Area business landscape.

Indeed, the 25 firms on this week's List of the largest temporary staffing agencies in the Bay Area are the biggest players in an industry that includes an estimated 400 firms across the region.

Kelly Services dominates the list. The Michigan-based company reported placing approximately 171,600 temporary employees in the Bay Area last year, more than four times the total reported by its nearest rival. Local revenue figures were not available for Kelly Services, but company-wide sales were nearly $4.5 billion for the most recent fiscal year.

Second in line, and possibly first had they submitted more complete figures, is Manpower. Despite only providing figures for their South Bay offices, Manpower placed about 39,000 temporary employees in 2000. Manpower, a publicly traded company, has approximately 3,700 offices globally and stated $12,400 million in 2000.

Spherion Workforce Architects ranked as the third largest temporary staffing agency in the Bay Area this year. Previously listed as Interim Services, Spherion is the result of a July 1999 merger between Norell Corp. and Interim Services. For the year 2000, the Florida-based company reported placing 15,000 employees in the Bay Area.

Rounding up the top-five, Adecco and Randstad North America tied for fourth place. In terms of Bay Area revenue, Adecco is clearly the larger of the two companies. Addeco reported $75 million in Bay Area revenue last year compared to Randstad's $25 million. All told, the 25 largest staffing agencies on this year's List placed more than 314,000 temporary employees last year or about 6,543 per week.
