Most budget consumer notebooks have three spindles, meaning they feature fixed hard, floppy, and optical (CD-ROM or DVD) drives. The $1,349 IBM ThinkPad iSeries 1300 1171-7WU, however, goes against the norm, dropping the internal floppy drive. Instead, it has an external USB floppy drive, which saves weight-after all, you can leave the floppy drive at home when you hit the road. The result is a two-spindle unit that tips the scales at just under 6 pounds. This in itself is an impressive feat for a budget notebook.
