2001 MAY 17 - (NewsRx Network) -- by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - In areas with good health care services, pregnant women are adequately protected from tetanus with a single booster of tetanus toxoid, say researchers working in India.
K. Aruldas and colleagues assessed the immunization history of women between the ages of 19 and 22 who were reporting for their first prenatal visit.
"Tetanus toxoid immunization is an integral part of the maternal and child health program in developing countries," explained Aruldas and coworkers. "It is likely that many women may have had childhood immunization and so already have anti-tetanus antibodies at the time of their first antenatal visit."
The researchers found that 81 of the 99 study subjects had histories of childhood tetanus immunization. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay revealed that initially 92% of the women had immunoglobulin E antibodies to tetanus, and 99% were protected after a single tetanus toxoid booster ("Antibody response to a single tetanus toxoid booster in young women in rural south India," Nati Med J India, ...
