2001 MAY 17 - (NewsRx Network) -- A new study has found a radiation treatment for early-stage breast cancer could reduce the treatment time from five weeks to as little as five days.
Dr. Frank Vicini of William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, compared the records of 174 women treated with radiation implants to the outcomes to similar women with five weeks of traditional radiation therapy.
"About eight years ago we started this study, when it was primarily a safety study," Vicini said. "We thought we should take a look at how they were doing overall, and discovered that the five-year results were virtually indistinguishable." The results of Vicini's study were published in the April 2001 edition of the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
