2001 MAY 17 - (NewsRx Network) -- The future of magnetic resonance imaging (MIRI) of the breast includes screening women at high risk of developing breast cancer, and the development of MR-guided core needle biopsy, predicts Carol Lee, MD, who was a keynote speaker at the American Roentgen Ray Society annual meeting in Seattle, Washington, on May 2, 2001.
Radiologists in Europe are starting to use MRI to screen women who have mutations of the BRCA-l and BRCA-2 genes because these women are at high risk of developing breast cancer, says Lee. MIRI may be better than mammography in these women because their cancers often occur at a younger age when their breasts may be dense, she says.
For MRI of the breast to be useful, the ability to biopsy non-palpable abnormalities that are found only on MRI is necessary. Work is being done on developing equipment to accurately perform core needle biopsy of these abnormalities.
