Food establishment businesses across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts are presently working under new food safety and service regulations because the state recently adopted the federal food code for the first time ever.

Adopting the federal food code vastly increased the complexity and number of regulations in Massachusetts governing operations in the food service industry. Understanding the code, let alone complying with it, has been a difficult task for many businesses, especially smaller businesses that do not have the time or the resources to sift through expanded regulations and interpret them.

In Boston, Mayor Menino learned of the potential for the burdens to smaller businesses the new code presented and asked the Boston Inspectional Services Department to create a way of providing assistance to food establishments on this issue. The result is the …
