--Dear Mr. Buckley: I would appreciate it if you would clarify the idiom "begging the question."
I believe it is currently misunderstood and misused in place of more common expressions like "calls for the question" or "raises the question." Is not "begging the question" a term that is the rough equivalent of what lawyers call "assuming a fact not in evidence"?
My understanding is that, in a logical progression, if you go from Point A to B to D to E, then by skipping C you have begged that particular question or premise.
