2001 MAY 10 - (NewsRx Network) -- Double reading of mammograms increases breast cancer detection rates by nearly 8%. Biopsy, surgical, and pathology charges to confirm diagnosis of those cancers is about $10,000 per cancer detected, a new study shows.
The study, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vermont, included the double reading of 25,368 screening mammograms. A total of 139 malignancies were found, with 11 of those being identified by the second radiologist reading the mammogram, said Susan Harvey, MD, assistant professor of radiology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. All 11 of the cancers were early stage disease, with seven of those being invasive, Harvey reported.
"Radiologists do not bill for their time to double read mammograms. This amounts to about 375 hours per year at my facility," Harvey told the American Roentgen Ray Society on May 2, 2001, at its annual meeting held this year in Seattle, Washington.
The charges were due to the fact that more women were recalled for diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds, and more biopsies were done due to the second reading, according to Harvey. For example, the second reader was responsible for an additional 42 biopsies, she said. It's ...
