State employment still going strong.

The number of people entering the work force increased by 15,800 people in February -- the highest jump since 1978.

That's the last time such a large increase has appeared in the labor force so early in the year. The Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (www.dllr.state.md.us) reported that the total labor force grew to 2.8 million people between January and February.

Meanwhile, about 3,700 people did not find jobs in February, joining the Maryland unemployment rolls.

The unemployment rate in Maryland, currently 4.1 percent, while not on par with neighboring Virginia (2.2 percent), is still below the national average of 4.6 percent. In the …
