Identity: Laying claim to one can be confusing. Ask any 14-year-old. Or any automaker, for that matter.
Pontiac AZTEK
Price: $29,730
Engine: 3.4-liter V6, 185 hp, 210 lb-ft
Curb weight: 4043 lbs
Drivetrain: awd, four-speed automatic
Y'all know by now that the fickle buying public has welcomed the Pontiac Aztek with a less-than-gracious reception. From its introduction last July through March this year, fewer than 20,000 have moved out of showrooms into garages nationwide. The cold shoulder may result from confusion over what exactly an Aztek is. Based on GM's minivan platform, it has too much going on in the plastics-and-geometry department to satisfy the conservative tastes of the minivan crowd. We think it wants to be a sport/ute, but when it debuted, its lack of four-wheel drive begged to differ. Now that it comes equipped with GM's Versatrak system, it may strengthen the SUV argument-and its appeal. Or not. After all, it still looks the same.
