2001 MAY 16 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Researchers in Australia have established baseline epidemiological patterns for rotavirus outbreaks that will allow future charting of new strains and measurement of vaccine efficacy.
R.F. Bishop and colleagues studied patterns of infection in 4,634 children with rotavirus-associated diarrhea who were admitted to eight Australian hospitals from 1993-1996.
Among their findings:
* The G serotypes, mainly G1 (67.8%), were identified in 81.9% of subjects
* G1 serotypes were predominant in all hospitals, followed intermittently by G2 and only sporadically by G3 and G4 strains
* Rotavirus peaked during the colder months in temperate climates
