Michele Alboreto: 1956-2001
A punctured tire caused the high-speed accident in which Audi Le Mans driver Michele Alboreto was killed in Germany last week, according to Audi officials.
Alboreto's Joest-run Audi R8 became airborne on a high-speed section of the Lausitzring test track in the former East Germany. The open-top prototype, which would have been traveling at about 210 mph, flew for more than 300 feet, according to a police statement.
The single-seater's roll-hoop was ripped off by the impact with the ground and Alboreto died instantly of massive head and neck injuries.
Pictures of the wreck showed that the left-rear Michelin tire had deflated. Audi was due to confirm on Monday afternoon that a slow puncture had been the cause of the accident.
The deflating tire pitched Alboreto into a half spin. He tried to collect the car, but air got underneath and flipped it.
The test had been scheduled to fine-tune revised bodywork that has been developed for the high-speed Le Mans circuit. There is no indication that this played any part in the accident.
