When Lindsay began her pursuit of a killer preying on newlyweds, she had no idea her search would also lead to a lusty proposal from her hunky partner.
* I rode up to Jenks's house with my new partner, Chris Raleigh. Chris was tall, with dark hair and strong shoulders, and he had a handsome, intelligent face that seemed to come to life in my presence. Our attraction to each other was undeniable, but so far, we were strictly business. Normally, Chris worked for City Hall, but when the department realized we were facing a serial killer, he had been temporarily assigned to the case.
We barely spoke, both of us brimming with anticipation. In a few short moments, we were going to arrest Nicholas Jenks, a world-famous writer who we believed was responsible for the gruesome murders of three newlywed couples. Outside, we were met by a squad of policemen. The plan was for them to start searching the house and grounds as soon as we took Jenks in. We rang the bell. Each second I waited, my heart pounded harder. All the reasons I had become a cop were coming back to me.
The door opened, and the housekeeper answered. Her eyes went wide as she took in the convergence of cops outside.
I flashed my badge. "We need to see Mr. Jenks right away."
We made our way back toward the sitting room. A startled Chessy Jenks, his wife, met us in the hall. She wasn't as tall and slender as I am and her hair was bleached blonder than my own honey-colored shade, but she was beautiful nonetheless. "Inspector," she gasped, recognizing me. "What's going on? What are all those police cars doing out front?"
"I'm sorry," I said, meeting her eyes. I was sorry for her, living with a murderer.
