Boston-based Putnam Investments, the fourth-biggest U.S. mutual fund group, let go of 256 employees--most of them in Massachusetts--citing lower equity markets. The layoffs represent Putnam's second round of job cuts in less than a month and account for 4 percent of the company's work force.
