2001 MAY 9 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is significantly more likely to affect nursing home residents than community residents of the same age, an epidemiological study has found.
Elderly nursing home patients represent a potential target group for vaccination - after a group B vaccine is developed, noted K.J. Henning and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Reporting in the April 2001 issue of the Journal of Infectious Diseases, Henning et al. noted:
* From 1991 to 1995, 84 of the 999 non-pregnant adult Maryland residents with GBS isolated from a normally sterile site were living in nursing homes
* The age-adjusted incidence of the disease for those >=65 years old was 72.3/100,000 for nursing home residents and 17.5/100,000 for community residents
* Eleven nursing homes with two or more cases accounted for 34 of the cases, one nursing home had eight patients within 22 months, and six of eight patients from three nursing homes and stereotype V disease
