NEW ORLEANS -- It's an unforgiving piece of equipment, made all the more intimidating by its recent history.

U.S. gymnast Shannon Miller won an Olympic gold medal in Atlanta on the very balance beam that now sits on the floor of the Louisiana Superdome.

And at the 30th annual AAU Junior Olympic Games this week, three Port Charlotte area girls were hoping to repeat her feat on the same beam.

For Gina Corsaletti, 11, the dream ended tearfully at the gymnastics preliminaries for 8- to 11-year-old girls. Competing for Team Florida, she fell Thursday night and finished 33rd among the 95 competitors from around …
