Building Winchester Boulevard as a hurricane evacuation route for Englewood and the Cape Haze penninsula is now on par with the controversial Pine Street extension as a local government priority.

The Sarasota and Charlotte County Commissions agreed Friday to cooperate in building both of the north-south routes out of Charlotte County to Interstate 75 in Sarasota County.

There is a growing sense of urgency for both roads.

"We've got to have Winchester and we've got to have Pine Street," said Charlotte County Commissioner Mac Horton.
