A "Welcome Back" balloon lies deflated on the Charlotte/AM news desk of Sara Margaret Conklin. Hope of her recovery once soared and for a few days, the battle with cancer was behind her and she was back at work.

It was a short-lived victory.

On Monday, Conklin, 49, died at the home of lifelong friends, Bill and Jackie Kalbas of Brandon. Their children, Jay and Kate, were Conklin's godchildren and were listed as her only survivors.

"We met in high school and played in the Charlotte High School band together," said Jackie Kalbas.

"She passed along her love of music to her godchildren. Both are musicians, and Sara encouraged them all along …
