As clerk of the circuit court for 17 years, "Bud" Hackney's door was always open.

He was willing to answer any question that a citizen, colleague or journalist had at any time. And if he didn't know the answer, he'd find someone who did.

Known for his integrity, Raymond "Bud" Hamilton Hackney Jr. always wanted to ensure that the community was well-served.

He died Sunday at the age of 81.

In 1972, Gov. Reubin Askew appointed Hackney clerk of the 12th Circuit Court for Sarasota County when his predecessor resigned before the end of the term. Shortly afterward, Hackney was elected to the …
