Lt. Gov. Buddy MacKay came to Sarasota on Monday with an unusual economic development pitch to one of Sarasota's most powerful pro-business organizations:
Improve day care.
He was serious.
"We have a tale of two cities (in Florida) - the working poor in the land of affluence," MacKay said, referring to the need to expand and improve day-care services. "This isn't social welfare. It is becoming the most important determinant in our economic future."
MacKay, the Democratic front-runner for governor, was speaking to the Argus Foundation, an organization of prominent Sarasota business people.
