Like many people in the Southeast, Don Putnam has watched Hurricane Bonnie wreak havoc on the Carolina coast, yet the emergency official is not headed north to help with the rescue and cleanup.

"It's really a crapshoot until we find out what Danielle is going to do," said Putnam, the liaison between the emergency operations center and the American Red Cross in Charlotte County.
