Longboat Key's beaches are now officially Longboat Key's responsibility.

The town formally ended its inclusion in Sarasota County's beach renourishment program Thursday, opting to restore its beaches by itself.

For the next 10 years, the town will receive nearly $4 million from the county's 3 percent tourist tax, which is levied on overnight and short-term lodging rentals in Sarasota County. The town had been receiving $150,000 annually, but had long complained that it was generating more in tourism-related taxes for the county than it was receiving.
