Buoyed by encouragement from unexpected sources, Punta Gorda City Council member Jane Brenner announced Monday that she will run for re-election.

"I enjoy the job, most of the time," Brenner said.

She said she hopes to preserve the city's environment, history and small-town ambience. The Punta Gorda Isles resident is currently leading a committee of civic and business leaders trying to preserve the Charlotte County Courthouse.

Brenner said that she's been surprised to hear from "people I didn't think were taking that much of an interest."
