The last phase of the City Centre project started Friday when a bulldozer began demolishing the former home of the Bradenton Police Department on Ninth Avenue West to make way for a new fire station.

Flanked by 25 firefighters in full uniform, Bradenton fire Chief Mark Souders bid farewell to both the former police facility, which will be gone by the end of next week, and the current fire station next door, which will be demolished in six months.

"This has been our home, but due to growth its usefulness has passed," Souders said of the fire station. "It is time to say goodbye."
