Board OKs charter school; The Charlotte County School Board voted 4-1 to approve a contract for Alpha Center.(A SECTION)

The Charlotte County School Board approved a contract for the county's first charter school Tuesday night, but not without some jabs at the school's founder and the charter school philosophy in general.

Chairman Lee Swift, who voted against the Alpha Center's application for a charter school in November but voted in favor of the contract Tuesday, said that the contract addresses many of the concerns he had about the accountability and finances of the planned school. He added, however, that his opposition to charter schools remains.
