In "Dialectic of Enlightenment," published about a half century ago, German philosophers Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer condemned the commercialization of any art form.

Highly critical of the idea of art as a commodity, Adorno and Horkheimer targeted many artistic institutions, including Hollywood, and argued that commercialization simply reduces the originality and value of art, which results in the endless production of mediocre pieces.
