* Transatlantic demand lifted gasoil prices, offsetting weak European buying. A surge in crude prices and continuing exports to Asia-Pacific boosted fuel oil prices.

* Draws in US middle distillate stocks opened up transatlantic arbitrage for Russian gasoil, boosting prices in northwest Europe by $16/t (see graph). Three 70,000t cargoes are scheduled to load at Latvia's Ventspils this week.

* Replenishment of stocks in the ARA region after the holiday period is expected to support the gasoil market in coming weeks. But there was limited demand for prompt gasoil cargoes thanks to ample stocks and warmer weather in Germany.
