Ombudsmen Train Young Doctors

Dr. Dan Bugoci is a young physician just beginning his medical career. Helen Mabus is 92 years old and lives in a nursing home. The paths of these two individuals would not normally have crossed but they recently shared some serious conversation and even some laughter.

They met as part of a unique training experience involving the nursing home ombudsman staff of the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) of Northwestern Ohio and the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo.

The program, initiated by nursing home ombudsman Cindy Kirk, offers medical students the opportunity to learn firsthand about the circumstances of nursing home residents in the Toledo area. According to Ms. Kirk, the medical students can get "out of their ivory tower and . . . see how nursing home residents really live."
