We keep comparing our long-term Lexus IS 300 to the BMW 3 Series, the star of the sports-sedan market. We need reminding sometimes that the IS 300 is not a Japanese 3 Series, but a 3 Series competitor, not a clone, but an alternative.
So far, the staff gives the $34,635 IS 300 near-unanimous approval, in both looks and function. The black-with-gray-trim interior is handsome and comfortable. Among the details we like are the seats' suede inserts that grip you when you're attacking tight curves, a convenient shelf on the dash, a smallish, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and layered gauges with modern graphics. The exterior shape, though not classical, pleases most of us.
So far, our only trip to the immaculate and friendly dealership (Meade Lexus in the Detroit area) was for the 5000-mile service. It included an oil change, filter and lube, inspection, tire rotation, road test and a cleaning. The first service is free.
