Editorial / Salvaging the life insurance sector Yomiuri Starting in April, the safety net designed to protect life insurance policyholders in the event of insurer collapses was shrunk. Until the end of March, the full amount of insurance payouts in categories directly linked to people's lives, such as life insurance benefits and hospitalization grants, had been paid even though payouts on savings-like policies, such as endowment insurance, were reduced. Insurance payouts have been protected as a temporary measure following the 1998 establishment of the Life Insurance Policyholders Protection Corporation, which guarantees a certain amount of insurance payouts to policyholders. …
