2001 APR 18 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) --
by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - The immune modulator imiquimod can dramatically decrease genital outbreaks of herpes simplex virus (HSV), especially when used with HSV vaccine.
C.J. Harrison and colleagues at Creighton University, Nebraska, evaluated imiquimod alone or in combination with HSV vaccine in animals inoculated genitally with HSV. Their findings were published in Vaccine.
Animals infected with HSV-2 were allowed to recover, then randomized to receive placebo, imiquimod alone for days 16 through 37, or the imiquimod regimen in addition to HSV-2 glycoprotein vaccine on days 16 and 37.
Imiquimod alone reduced recurrences 62.6% compared to placebo, while imiquimod plus vaccine reduced recurrences 80.6%, Harrison and team reported. This effect lasted through 14 weeks of follow-up in the imiquimod-plus-vaccine group, while it only lasted through 10 weeks in the imiquimod-alone group ("Reduction of recurrent HSV disease using imiquimod alone or combined with a glycoprotein vaccine," Vaccine, 2001;19(13-14):1820-1826).
Harrison et al. linked the reduction in recurrence to an increased in vitro, HSV-induced, interleukin 2 response and natural killer cell activity ...
