This hasn't been the best 12 months for the U.S. military. The incident over the China Sea is only one of many mishaps. As retired Air Force Gen. Chuck Horner said of the state of the military: "I've seen the trends, and they're not good." And that was back in October 2000. A look at the log for the past 12 months:

April 8, 2000:MV-22 Osprey goes down in flames over Arizona. Nineteen Marines dead.

July 14, 2000:Two Navy ships, the USS Denver and the USNS Yukon, collide near Hawaii. Serious damage--but luckily no injuries.

Aug. 10, 2000:U.S. Navy's MH-53E helicopter crashes into Gulf of Mexico. Four dead, two injured.

Nov. 13, 2000:Two U.S. F-16 fighter ...
