Despite recent reports of the potential dangers associated with certain pediatric vaccines, controversies surrounding clinical trial procedures, and conflicting patent positions, the pipeline for vaccine products is more robust than ever.
According to a new study from Theta Reports, New York, more than 15 new immunotherapy medicines have come to market in the past two years and at least 25 products are in late stage clinical trials. Furthermore, at least 400 vaccine products are in various earlier stages of development.
Therapeutic vaccines, the category that represents the vast majority of early-stage products, include antibody, gene, and immunoprotein medicines. According to the study, "Vaccines 2001: The world markets," the therapeutic vaccine segment alone generated product sales of $2 billion in 1999 and is expected to show annual average growth of 21% to reach $4.5 billion in 2005.
The road will not be without bumps, though. Recent recalls of vaccines - such as AHP/Wyeth's RotaShield rotavirus vaccine - and consumer wariness have prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reassess the clinical trial process for vaccines.
