ID Biomedical Corp. announced on March 21, 2001, that it has been granted permission by the Therapeutic Products Program of Health Canada to conduct a Phase I/II clinical trial of StreptAvax(TM), a vaccine for the prevention of infections caused by group A Streptococcus.
StreptAvax is the only vaccine of its kind being tested in human clinical trials. It is a multivalent recombinant vaccine developed to cover 26 serotypes of group A Streptococcus. According to data obtained from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), these serotypes are believed to be responsible for causing the vast majority of group A Streptococcus-related diseases.
The proposed clinical trial will initially evaluate the safety of StreptAvax in a small group of adults. With positive results, the studies will move to examine the safety and immune response of the vaccine in children.
