Baltimore to increase container traffic through 10-year pact with Mediterranean Shipping Co.

The Port of Baltimore has capped a recent string of major contract wins with the biggest container deal in its history. The agreement with Mediterranean Shipping Co., signed March 13, commits the world's fourth-largest container line to raising the number of containers it moves through the Seagirt Marine Terminal to 350,000 units over the next 10 years.

According to Pasquale Formisano, director of Geneva-based MSC, the shipping line was willing to make a long-term commitment to the port because in terms of container-handling performance "the Port of Baltimore is the best port on the U.S. East Coast."
