2001 MAR 22 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michelle Marble, staff medical writer--Bupivacine can be used instead of lidocaine as an intrathecal anesthetic for in vitro fertilization procedures, a new study shows.
Hyperbaric bupivacaine with fentanyl are viable alternatives to lidocaine, although this combination is associated with longer waits until discharge, say researchers at Harvard University's Brigham & Women's Hospital.
"Recent controversy with the use of intrathecal lidocaine has prompted the search for suitable ambulatory surgery alternatives," explained L.C. Tsen and colleagues in the journal Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine.
"Forty women enrolled and completed our prospective, randomized, double-blinded study of intrathecal hyperbaric bupivacaine 3.75 mg (0.5 ml of 0.75%) with fentanyl 25 [micro]g versus hyperbaric lidocaine 30 mg (2.0 ml of 1.5%) with fentanyl 25 [micro]g," continued the researchers.
Tsen and colleagues recorded the onset and level of sensory and motor block; the time to ambulation urination, and discharge; and any intra- and postoperative complications, including hypotension, pruritus, nausea, emesis, postdural puncture headache, and post-spinal pain syndrome (PSPS). They evaluated the data using analysis of variance, chi-square, and Mann-Whitney U tests. P values less than 0.05 were considered significant.
The results showed that there ...
