by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - A vaccine targeting E6 and E7 oncogenes in human papillomavirus might be an effective therapy for cervical cancer.
The second most common cause of cancer death in women worldwide, cervical cancer is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and 18 infection. A vaccine specific to HPV cancer genes E6 and E7 could be useful, proposed Malcolm Adams and colleagues working in Wales
They observed the ability of TA-HPV, a new vaccine comprising vaccinia virus HPV 16 and 18 E6/E7 genes, for its ability to stimulate cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) response in women at varying stages of cervical cancer.
Adams and team noted a positive CTL response in the following groups of patients:
* One of three patients with advanced cervical cancer
* Three of 12 patients with CIN3 neoplasias
