by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Influenza vaccine can prevent worsening symptoms in young children with asthma, according to a large population-based study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"Influenza can exacerbate asthma, particularly in children," noted Piotr Kramarz and colleagues. "We evaluated influenza vaccine effectiveness in protecting children against influenza-related asthma exacerbations."
Piotr and colleagues used medical and vaccination records from four large health maintenance organizations to study the effectiveness of vaccine over three flu seasons from 1993 to 1996. Their results were published in the Journal of Pediatrics.
The researchers looked at asthmatic children one to six years old who visited the emergency department or hospital for asthma exacerbations both before and after receiving the flu vaccine ("Does influenza vaccination prevent asthma exacerbations in children?" J Pediatr, March 2001;138(3):306-310).
