by N.R. Saltmarsh, staff medical writer - Timing of meningococcal vaccine after bone marrow transplant does not appear make a difference in immune response.
T. Parkkali and colleagues at the University of Helsinki tested meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Men PS) in 44 bone marrow transplant patients who received the vaccine at either eight or 20 months post-transplant.
The researchers measured geometric mean concentrations (GMC) of antibodies to serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis (Men A) and serogroup C N. meningitidis (Men C). They found a significant increase after one month, though that level decreased about 50% by six months post-vaccination ("Tetravalent meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine is immunogenic in adult allogeneic BMT recipients," Bone Marrow Transplantation, 2001;27(1):79-84).
"Men PS vaccine induced good and equal antibody responses to Men A and Men C PSs in allogeneic BMT recipients regardless of timing after BMT," noted Parkkali and colleagues. "Vaccination against N. meningitidis should ...
