Try these easy, low-dough (slightly loco-sounding) tips to more gorgeous hair, skin, nails, and makeup.
1. A feel-good way to moisturize on cold mornings: Warm your body cream before applying, says Marie O'Brien, an aesthetician at the Elizabeth Arden Spa in Absecon, New Jersey. Bring the jar or tube into the shower with you and let the hot water run over it, or place a small amount of cream in a microwave-safe bowl and nuke it for 20 seconds. Try Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Honey Drops Body Cream $15.
2. Cop instantly shiny hair in one simple step: Before you exit the shower, make the water as cold as you can take it. Standing under it for a few seconds will close hair cuticles so your strands will lie flat and look sleek, says tresspert Liz Wilde, author of Hair: 100 styling Secrets (Time Life, 2000).
3. Products made for tots are gentle, effective, and easy on the wallet Baby wipes are great makeup removers, and lotions formulated for toddlers are excellent for sensitive adult skin. Our favorites: Huggies Wipes Original, $6, Mustela Moisturizer for Babies, $11, and L'Oreal Ombrelle SPF 44 Lotion for Kids, $9.
4. When you're ambushed by last-minute party plans, do a beat-the-clock beauty routine by using one of the new sheer face glosses on lips, cheeks, and eyes. They create a polished effect pronto. Try Pretty Pretty Face Salve in Carmela, $18, or Ramy Face Gloss in Face Candy, $18.50.
5. If your dye job has left your strands stinky, douse them with ketchup, says Baton Rouge tresspert Sam Brocato. Dilute a couple of tablespoons of the condiment in warm water and apply to dry hair 15 minutes before showering. Then rinse, shampoo, and condition as usual to remove any strong chemical odors for good.
6. If tweezing is torture for you, use Anbesol (yes, the numbing ointment for gums), $6.29, to reduce the pain of brow grooming, says Diane Irons, author of 911 Beauty Secrets (Sourcebooks, 1999). Just rub it on the skin around your brow before you pluck.
