2001 MAR 15 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Julie Crawshaw, staff medical writer -- Education aimed at preventing eating disorders in premenarchial adolescents may be dangerous, researchers in Australia say.
S. Abraham and colleagues at the University of Sydney studied 51 pre-and-postmenarchal girls. ("Body mass index, menarche, and perception of dieting among peripubertal adolescent females," International Journal of Eating Disorders, 2001;29(1):23-28.).
The Abraham team found that postmenarchial girls were much more likely to have higher body mass index (BMI) and to be able to clearly explain their reasons for dieting than their premenarchial classmates of the same age. Postmenarchial students also more frequently reported dieting and exercising to lose weight.
In contrast, Abraham et al. found that most premenarchial girls considered dieting as healthful eating and did not connect losing weight with dieting unless they were about to begin menstruating and had experienced a rise in BMI.
