2001 MAR 15 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- New mothers often need education about the risks of transmitting HIV to their babies, researchers warn.
While almost all women in their study knew about the possibility of perinatal HLV infection, Duke University researchers found that large numbers of the women had major gaps in their knowledge.
Four out of 10 women did not know that newborns can contract the infection through breast feeding, while almost half were unaware that medication was available to prevent this transmission, said E.B. Walter and colleagues at Duke University's Children's Primary Care clinics.
Walter et al. also found that, while 84% of the women studied thought that all pregnant women should undergo HIV testing (with 60% believing it should be legally required), only 75% of the new mothers accepted free HIV testing. The degree of transmission knowledge shown did not affect the likelihood of accepting HIV testing ("New mothers' knowledge and attitudes about perinatal human immunodeficiency virus infection," Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2001;97(1):70-76).
