2001 MAR 15 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- by Maryclaire Lindgren, staff medical writer -- Colposcopy patients need to be forewarned that neither ibuprofen nor a topical benzocaine gel will relieve the pain from the procedure.
Colposcopies are performed to obtain cervical biopsies. Though not considered very painful, pain thresholds differ among women, and some request analgesics.
L. Church and colleagues at the University of Washington School of Medicine tried oral ibuprofen and a topical benzocaine gel in 99 women undergoing colposcopy, but saw very little therapeutic benefit.
The women were given 800 mg of ibuprofen, a 20% benzocaine gel, both these medicines, or placebo. The women reported their pain during speculum placement, endocervical curettage (ECC, scraping of the mucous membrane of the cervical canal), and cervical biopsy.
"Colposcopy is perceived as somewhat painful, but oral ibuprofen and topical benzocaine gel, alone or together, provided no advantage over placebo in decreasing colposcopy pain," the researchers asserted.
